Program Features and Compensation
Your Practice Focus
Typically you will be assigned to one or two of each of our practice areas for which you indicated a preference. However, because interests can change and evolve, we also expose you to other practice groups through our training programs.
Your Work
Wherever possible you’ll have the opportunity to attend client meetings, closings, negotiations, depositions, trials and courtroom hearings. The lawyers you work with will also ask you to draft research memoranda, litigation pleadings, motions and briefs, and a broad range of transactional documents. It’s a well-rounded approach that lets you demonstrate your analytical, advocacy and writing skills.
Your Hours
While we don’t require summer associates to work a minimum number of hours, most work an average of 40 to 50 hours per week depending on their work assignments. It gives you a feel for the “real world” pace, and reflects the quality work that you’ll have.
Your Assignments
Each summer associate is assigned a “supervisor” who gives you work assignments. Assignments correspond with practice areas as you rotate or switch during the summer.
Your Compensation
Our summer associate compensation is competitive with the peer law firms in whatever city you work in. In the Summer of 2010, Haynes and Boone paid all of our summer associates $3,077 per week.
Your Social Activities
You’ll have fun! - but there is a purpose to it: getting to know your peers and the Haynes and Boone lawyers who may be your future colleagues. We encourage you to participate in events like dinners, sporting events and practice group get-togethers, but you won’t be required to attend all activities. We design the social aspects of your summer so you can fully experience the city in which you’re clerking.
Your Relocation
Haynes and Boone pays your summer associate moving allowance both ways if you work only with us during the summer. If you split your summer with another employer in the same city, we will pay one-way. We also work with a reputable apartment locating company to help you find summer accommodations. They will offer rental options that best meet your location and price requirements.
